Lady Liberty for Island Batik
Lady Liberty Free Theme Challenge for June 2020
This month’s challenge for Island Batik Ambassador was to create a project of our choice in any Island Batik fabric, style, or design. The scrappy quilt designed for the January 2020 challenge was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. It contained a very realistic Statue of Liberty but spurred an idea for a different Lady Liberty. This idea together with current issues in the United States called to me. Lady Liberty looks to a bright future where masses yearning to breathe free. This wall quilt is 24” X 34”.
I've pulled a red, white, and blue themed colorway of Island Batik for a Lady Liberty Art Quilt.
Design work begins on my CutterPillar light table. All pattern pieces are then individually traced onto freezer paper before pressing each to Mistyfuse© backed fabric.
The pattern is covered with a nonstick sheet as Mistyfuse© backed Island Batik fabrics are layered and bonded together. • Each freezer paper pattern is removed before bonding. • A variety of neutral batiks are stitched to create background fabric. • Auditioning Lady Liberty (but not bonding) to the background.
• Auditioning gold stars on background with Lady Liberty • Quilting on my Handi Quilter Amara with Pro-Stitcher using Anita Shackelford's QOV Star pattern. • Hobbs Thermore Quilt Batting provides the perfect weight for wall quilts. • Rich blue Aurifil 50 wt cotton thread shows off quilt design.
• Auditioning Lady Liberty applique on quilted background • Schmetz Needles Super Nonstick are perfect for fused fabric as there is never a build-up on needle and thread flows freely. • Gold star appliquéd with zigzag stitching. • Machine appliqué on fused Lady Liberty with a variety of Aurifil 50 wt cotton thread.
• Lady Liberty's machine appliqué over quilted background completed • Single fold binding stitched to the front side of quilt • Binding pressed to back and secured with Clover USA Wonder Clips. • Binding topstitched on the front through all layers securing binding with zero hand stitching.
