Coiled Rope Home Decor for Island Batik

Blog Hop May 2020 - Home Decor

The Ultimate Home Decor Blog Hop and Giveaway is the perfect opportunity to create useful, aesthetically pleasing articles with my most favorite fabric, Island Batiks. I believe coiled rope baskets created with clothesline are quilted fiber art. If the definition of a quilt is two layers of fabric stitched together with some form of fiber between the layers…then these qualify.

Twenty rich colors of deep navy and sparking golds make up the Sundance collection by Kathy Engle. I was task to create a home decor item or items using as many of the fabrics as possible. These coiled rope project used every single fabric and were stitched with Aurifil Blue Combo 50 wt cotton thread. This blue is from the Como Blue Color Builders. Both the fabrics and threads that were provided to me in my role as an Island Batik Ambassador. Yards and yards and yards of clothesline was wrapped with 3/4” strips of fabric using a special wrapping tool my dear hubby created to hold the rope tight. All the wrapping was completed on the car ride back to Michigan from teaching at AQS Quilt Week in Daytona Beach, FL.

Each basket was stitched with a zigzag stitch using an open toed foot on a ‘new to me’ twenty year old Bernina. This machine could stitch through anything and keep on going. It’s set up in my home studio loaded with a size #100 titanium-coated needle and used just for baskets.

Time to add a bit of bling to a couple of the baskets. Using my Whimsical Flower Template and novelty threads, the template is wrapped, stitched and snipped. This produces a flower-like ornament that can be used by its self or layered with other sizes before topping with a button or bead for a sparkling point of interest. Templates are available in my Etsy shop.
