The First One - For Project QUILTING 14.1
It has been my goal to participate in all SIX Project QUILTING Challenges during a single year. Despite being gone all week teaching out of state, a long drive home, with the laundry to do, and an empty fridge...I had the plan to meet that goal in 2023. Last Sunday when the first challenge for 2023 was announced, I was still visiting family in Virginia. Although I was away from my studio, I began researching quilting projects that related to the word ONE.
The title of this week's challenge is THE FIRST ONE. A quilted project must be completed and posted by noon Sunday and somehow reflect number one. Enter a blog from 2015 published by Hearts and Bees with a ONE-HOUR basket tutorial!
A fabulous fabric in my stash from Frond Design Studio was selected. This has been in my stash from a long ago road trip to her studio in the Amana Colonies in Iowa. A small portion of this piece was used but with careful cutting there will be enough for this project.
Two fabrics and batting are required for the ONE-HOUR basket from Hearts and Bees Tutorial, exterior fabric from Frond Design Studio, lining fabric from a batik fat quarter picked up on a recent quilt guild bus trip, and fusible batting from a previous project. I used Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Fusible Quilt batting.
Although the instructions for the ONE-HOUR basket from Hearts and Bees Tutorial didn’t include quilting, I added it. The vertical straight quilt lines are placed one inch apart and stitched on my BERNINA 770 QE.
The exterior of the basket and lining are both stitched the same way, both side seams and bottom. The lining was stitched with a 5/8 inch seams while the exterior used 1/2 inch seams. A three inch square is cut from the bottom corners on both the lining and exterior units. In my haste to finish on time, I neglected to take photos of this step. The finished One Hour Basket is completed with several hours to spare to make the deadline for Project QUILTING 14.1. It will be filled with goodies and gifted to a friend at her sixtieth birthday party later today!
