August 2019 Star Light Star Bright Challenge
The Island Batik Ambassador project this month is to create lap sized or larger quilt using any star pattern. What a great opportunity to pull out McCall's Quilting magazine from May/June 2014 with Stars & Strips by Bev Getschel, designer and quilter. Note: materials and supplies for this project were provided to me by Island Batik and it’s industry partners, Aurifil Thread, Hobbs Batting and Accuquilt cutting system in my capacity as an Island Batik Ambassador.
Island Batik Alpine Ice 2-1/2" strips provided the starting point for blues. Adding additional navy shades from the basic line captured the scrappy look. Red and whites are more of my basic favorites. Industry partners, AccuQuilt, provided ambassadors with the GO! Qube for 8" Blocks which is perfect to speed up the process.
Scrappy Island Batik reds and solid white create the perfect Star Light Star Bright. AccuQuilt GO! Qube 8" Blocks #2 and #5 dies stitch together quickly and with great accuracy.
Three assorted 2-1/2' strips are stitched and pressed. These are sub-cut into 6-1/2" blocks before staggering with star blocks to create six 6-1/2” rows. Pattern from May/June 2014 McCall's Quilting magazine designed by Bev Getschel.
Check out the pop of brightness that Island Batik solid white adds. Have you used these solids? The tightly woven fabric has almost no ravel, a lovely drape and low 'show through'.
It's off to Annabelle, my Handi Quilter Amara, to thread up with Aurifil thread 50wt Mako Cotton. Hobbs Heirloom Premium Cotton batting was used for its warmth, drape and breathability. Anita Shackelford's QOV Star pattern on my Pro-Stitcher is stitched in whimsical rows across the quilt.
With quilting completed, the quilt is ready to square up. My Omnigrid 20-1/2 X 20-1/2" ruler is my go-to tool for this step. Binding of Island Batik Triangle Patch fabric in Alpine Ice adds a bit of pizzaz to the edges. Binding is accented with just a few pops of red for fun.
